EXHIBITION
Silvia Salvador Kopp - “Add me as a friend”
From December 12, 2009 until January 6, 2010
Opening: December 12, 2009 at 6 p.m.
Enblanco is proud to present the exhibition ADD ME AS A FRIEND, works by Silvia Salvador Kopp.
At a first glance, Silvia Salvador Kopp’s drawings would appear to refer, above all, to her interest in graphic elements, in colour, structure and pattern, relating to her work in the fashion industry. The small-scale drawings in neoncoloured pencil on printed paper show single figures or groups of figures in half portrait, who are looking straight towards the spectator. Bags, glasses, headgear and other fashion accessories are rendered with the same details as fabric patterns and brand names. The apparent naivety of the drawings is undermined through the attention to detail of the fashion accessories and the contrasting absence of background. The emphasis lies with the superficial and the surface, which is heightened because the clothing gets more attention than the physiognomy of the faces.
The artist finds the models for her drawings in reproductions in magazines, in the circle of her friends and among friends from the internet. The title of the show, ADD ME AS A FRIEND, alludes to an option of the online network Facebook. The formulation is so familiar that an explanation of the context is necessary only to those who move outside this virtual community. A community which is based less on shared experiences and shared stages of life than on the variety of potential interpersonal connections. The leaving of messages and the publishing and sharing of personal information allow for another way of participating in the lives of others. The possibility of updating one’s profile as promptly as one desires is not insignificant. This version of “first-hand-experience” appears to be so alluring that an actual meeting does not always occur. Thus, Silvia Salvador Kopp’s drawings leave the spectator with a sense of dissatisfaction, similar to an afternoon spent on the internet, instead of having a coffee with friends.
Silvia Salvador Kopp studied Fine Arts in Salamanca, Spain. Since 2001 she has lived and worked in Berlin. With Fernando Cornejo she founded the fashion label potipoti in 2005. For more information on the artist and on potipoti please see www.potipoti.com.
